LUCKY KALI
Update on August 2018

The last few months have been very active for Association Moey in Nepal where we continue our work to give a better life to captive elephants.
Lucky Kali celebrating one year of freedom!
When I first met Lucky Kali, she was standing chained by both a front and back foot, behind barbed wire. Her feet were in bad condition and she was suffering from a deep and severe wound at the base of her tail. Lucky was kept in precarious hygiene conditions, visibly thin and weak. In spite of that, she emanated a gentle and beautiful light.

Thanks to constant care since her rescue, 65-year-old Lucky Kali is now in good health and is recovering from a life of hard work in both logging and tourism industry. Surrounded by a loving and caring team and thanks to kindness, compassion and respect, Lucky has regained strength and can now enjoy an unexpected happiness, far from the elephant she was last summer, waiting to be loaded into a truck and sold to a temple in India.
Our profound gratitude goes out to Direct Aid Nepal who partnered with us to rescue Lucky and for those of you who help make this year the best year ever in Lucky Kali’s life!

Lucky Kali lives at Sapana Village Lodge, where by example we are showing that people can have an educational and inspirational elephant experience without riding or shows. We have had many visitors who have found great joy in watching Lucky Kali enjoying herself just being an elephant. This has inspired the lodge owner Dhruba Giri, who is now interested in giving his own elephants the same lifestyle that Lucky Kali enjoys. We are very thankful to Dhruba for giving us the opportunity to house Lucky Kali and launch our program.

Lucky Kali is free at night!
A huge thank you again to Direct Aid Nepal for building Lucky Kali a “chain free corral”.

It is a solar powered corral to contain elephants safely without chains. A beautiful enclosure where Lucky spends her nights, free to sleep where she wants and to cover herself with earth to be protected from the insects and the heat. Inside the corral is a central wood pole where she can scratch at will. Beside her, in 3 other enclosures also built by funds donated by Direct Aid Nepal, are the four elephants of Sapana Village Lodge. This is an amazing improvement in these elephants’ lives, as Asian working elephants are kept on chains – in Nepal they are mostly chained by one front and one back foot – for around 12 hours a day.

Association Moey founder, Lena Quénard, is on the ground with Lucky since the first day, taking care of her and teaching our mahouts a more compassionate way to manage her. Association Moey cover Lucky’s monthly expenses of 1,000 USD/month  which includes a nutritious diet for Lucky Kali, access to the river and the big land for grazing, mud bath, as well as food and housing for her two mahouts (care givers) and their salaries.

We want to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for your trust and support over the years!

Every donation, no matter how large or small, makes a huge difference.
