We have some important updates to share with you regarding the sanctuary and the recent efforts to ensure Lucky’s well-being 🐘 and the long-term sustainability of this unique refuge. 🌿
Completed work and repairs
• Protection for Lucky
With winter approaching, we installed tarps to insulate her night enclosure and provide extra warmth. (Cost: 200 CHF) ❄️
• Comfort for Lucky
Eight tractor-loads of sand were delivered to her enclosure to improve her sleep, ensure a soft surface, and make cleaning easier. (Cost: 320 CHF) 🌛
• Emergency repairs
Frequent incursions by wild elephants and a rhinoceros have caused damage to our infrastructure.
We have repaired the kitchen walls, the gate multiple times, and some electrical installations.
Additionally, temporary night guards were hired to secure the sanctuary. (Total cost: 1,500 CHF) ⚒️
• Post-flood repairs
Two river access gates were fixed to ensure a safe passage for Lucky. (Cost: 400 CHF) 🌊
Upcoming work and repairs
• Replacement of damaged fences
Floods have caused several essential fences to collapse, compromising the sanctuary’s security.
Replacing them is a priority to prevent neighboring livestock from invading our land. (Estimated cost: 1,000 CHF) 🛠️
• Covering Lucky’s shelter roof
The current humidity is causing condensation, leading to water dripping on Lucky at night, affecting her comfort and health.
We urgently need to cover the roof to provide her with a dry shelter throughout the winter. (Estimated cost: 800 CHF) 🌧️
• Feeding during the dry season
Due to the scarcity of vegetation, a local community member cuts and delivers bamboo and foliage daily.
This generates additional temporary wages and significant transportation costs. (Monthly cost: 500 CHF) 🌳
• Security reinforcement
The frequent presence of a rhinoceros requires us to hire a full-time guard to patrol our 7-hectare land throughout the day.
His role is to alert us in case of danger, as these animals can attack without warning. (Monthly cost: 200 CHF) 🚨
A demanding financial situation
These expenses add to our regular costs: Lucky’s daily food, salaries, sanctuary maintenance, and land rental.
At present, we have no financial reserves to absorb these unexpected costs, totaling 4,920 CHF. 💰
Without financial reserves, your support is essential to keep the sanctuary running and ensure Lucky’s well-being. 💕
Additionally, we are fortunate to have the expertise of Martine Maquet, a professional in fundraising, who is generously offering her skills to support us.
We are deeply grateful for her valuable commitment. 🙏
Thanks to her work, a solid funding proposal is in progress to attract new donors and sponsors, ensuring the sanctuary’s long-term sustainability.
We are confident that these efforts will soon bear fruit. 🌟

Finally, I would like to highlight the incredible work of Jérôme, a long-time ally, friend, and member of our association’s board.
Jérôme has created a brand-new website (the one you’re watching now), much more mobile-friendly, to keep you informed and provide easier access to our latest updates.
We still need to add a few final touches, but it is already fully functional. 💻
