The sanctuary recently rescued an elderly elephant, Begam Kali, who faced a perilous future before intervention. Thanks to NGO Planting Peace and generous supporters, she is now safe, but the rescue created a budget gap. The sanctuary is seeking additional contributions to ensure the ongoing care for Begam Kali and another elephant, Lucky.

The sanctuary has made important repairs for Lucky’s well-being, including insulation, sand deliveries, and emergency repairs totaling 4,920 CHF. Upcoming costs focus on replacing fences, covering her shelter, securing food supply, and reinforcing security. Donations and volunteer efforts are crucial for ongoing support and sustainability as financial reserves are lacking.

Lucky Kali is at risk of being sold to India due to economic challenges and decreased tourism. Her owner has decided not to renew her lease, raising fears of her being sent away from her home, friends, and comfortable life. Efforts to prevent this illegal trade are ongoing.

In 2020, a dedicated effort provided free foot care for numerous captive elephants and daily sustenance for street dogs, highlighting community support. A food supplement program for elephants, started in September, now aids seven elephants, enhancing their health with essential nutrients, costing 50 USD per month for each elephant’s supplements.

In the Summer Newsletter, the founder Lena shares her unexpected extended stay in Nepal since March 2020 due to Covid-19 travel restrictions. While caring for her dog Lucky, the Association Moey has also provided free foot care to elephants in Sauraha, benefiting from the lockdown’s reduced tourist activity.
