Thanks to your support, we are improving the lives of captive working elephants in Nepal.
A scratching post for a working Elephant
We recently built this scratching post – first of its kind – for Sano Punam kali who works in the tourist industry in Sauraha, Nepal.
This allows her daily moments of relaxation, freedom of chain and care of her skin.
Enjoy watching her scratch freely for the very first time in her life.
Water for the working Elephants
These privately owned working elephants can now cool off and drink at will in a much healthier environment.
We cleaned everything up, had gravel and soil trucks delivered, bought water pump motors and garden hoses so that these elephants could finally drink freely and be properly refreshed.
With your help, we improve the lives of captive working elephants, whether by renewing their shelter, delivering healthy food or providing foot care.
At Association Moey, we do our best with the donations we receive, even small amounts of $10 or $15 make a big difference on the ground and allow us to continue improving the welfare of captive elephants in Nepal.
Buckets of water are not enough to cool off
Most of the working elephants in Nepal suffer from the heat, but unfortunately they receive only a few buckets of water per day to cool off, which is by far not enough. Day after day, they suffer from a lack of water and are not able to drink enough to be well hydrated.
In Nepal, when the elephants are not giving rides, they are chained in small shelters.
The structure is made of 4 iron poles and a small metal roof.
Over time, the earthen soil erodes, hollows out, and the bare soil is easily swept away by wind and rain, leaving stones to appear.
At night, the elephant will lie down on the hard ground to sleep there for a few hours, front and rear feet chained. Sometimes both front legs plus one back leg.
In normal times, shelters with adequate and clean ground are rare.
Since March 2020 and the covid-19, the elephants’ owners are not making sufficient financial income anymore, so it is more than uncertain that their elephant shelter’s ground will be refreshed.
For these reasons and thanks to your donations, Association Moey was able to renewed the ground of 4 shelters.
Excellent soil delivered by tractors!
Once the earth has been delivered, the mahout will work to spread it and in some cases, asked us for more!
It is a well-known fact that the mahouts are delighted to be able to present an improved and clean shelter
for the elephant they are in charge,
rather than a ground of dirty gravel.
Association Moey is working to improve the life of captive working elephants in Asia and their mahouts.
With your help, we can help them in their daily lives, whether it is by renewing their shelter, delivering healthy food or assisting with options for better care.
Help us to continue making a difference.
